Gameplay

The main character in I-Ninja, has a variety of acrobatic abilities that are used throughout the game to defeat the Ranx army led by Master O-Dor. In addition to basic skills such as running and jumping, Ninja can also double jump, spin his sword around while midair for a limited time and use it to fall slower than normal, and use the shape of the environment to his advantage. Throughout the game there are several uniquely designed walls that Ninja can run on, and points where Ninja can use his grappling hook to swing across a gap.

Certain levels also provide Ninja with explosive darts and ricocheting shuriken to use against his foes; both of these can be aimed using a first-person view, but shuriken can also be thrown with an auto-aim feature. Occasionally, Ninja will encounter an enemy that will leap into the air with him (in anime fashion) to battle, and the two will remain suspended in a sort of flying void until the foe is defeated. While in this void, Ninja flies around and can dash, slash with his sword, perform an unblockable but heavily delayed thrusting attack, and throw shuriken if he has them. As Ninja attacks he will build an attack gauge that, when filled to certain levels, can be spent to temporarily enhance his abilities. As the player progresses through the game he will gain access to more of these abilities; using them he can increase his strength, heal his life bar, ride a giant shuriken to quickly slay foes, or even become invincible, which allows him to greatly harm enemies in his vicinity without even touching them. (When Ninja becomes invincible, he says "I-Ninja!", which provides the game with its namesake.)

The story is set after the original game, and you play as the heir to the previous Overlord. The first level is the tutorial level, set in a snowy village where you can get a feel for what you can do. At this point, your wickedness is limited to destroying snowmen and firing off rockets, but you’ll eventually meet the minions, loyal servants whom you direct with simple button commands. With your new brainless recruits in tow, you’ll steal clothes from other children to disguise the ugly gremlins and then sneak them into the village party. However, you aren’t going to be the only one looking for trouble. There’s a new empire growing and spreading across the land, banishing everything that is evil and all things magical. Since that encompasses you, you must learn how to manage your minions and avoid getting caught.

The minions are smarter this time around, and they can help you manage heavy machinery, like catapults. Depending on color of the minions, they’ll jump on mounts (like wolves or spiders) so they can access areas that are otherwise unreachable by foot. A minimap is shown at the bottom of the screen to direct you to your next quest, making exploration a bit easier, and the camera can now be controlled with the right analog stick. The stick isn’t solely dedicated to the camera, however, because you can swing the camera left and right and force your minions to charge forward by pushing up on the analog stick. Seal clubbing was demonstrated the last time we saw the game, so we decided to skip the destruction of cute animals by jumping into a land of fairies, complete with environmentalist elves speaking in a Californian accent. This magical place is separate from the human world, as the fairies have decided to live peacefully and harmoniously with other magical creatures. This clearly doesn’t sit very well with you as the evil Overlord; plus, there are riches and gems to be discovered. In this fairyland, we were able to see a new feature that lets you possess the body of a minion. By doing this, you can sneak into areas undetected and break down barriers so that you can easily barge through once you’ve returned to your own body.

The game follows the series' standard open world gameplay in the Ezio and Altaïr Sequences, where the game's main story takes place. New gameplay additions include an item called the "hookblade", which can be used to zipline across the city or grab enemies to yank them in for a combo attack.

The hookblade reportedly speeds up navigation by around 30 percent. Along with the hookblade, Ezio also has around 150 different bomb variations at his disposal, which are to be crafted. The game features new "Desmond Sequences", "Dali-esque" first-person platforming missions in a radical departure for the series^.

Also added and expanded are seizing districts of the city from the Templars. While capturing a district is very similar to Brotherhood, the Templars will attempt to recapture districts, which Ezio must defend using a "tower defense" minigame, where he controls a group of Assassins from rooftops against several waves of Templar soldiers and siege equipment. Similar to Brotherhood, initiates can be sent on missions to other regions, eventually wresting control from the Templars, and then using the city to produce a stream of income and new Assassin recruits.

The stylish grade shows up on the side of the screen and starts at "Deadly"(D); progresses through "Carnage"(C), "Brutal"(B), and "Atomic"(A); then, progresses through one last bar of grade containing the phrases "Smokin'"(S), "Smokin' Style"(SS), and lastly "Smokin' Sick Style"(SSS). Stylish combat is the main focus of the game, which is conveyed through unbroken combos of varied attacks while avoiding damage. The player must avoid enemy attacks to continue performing combos, often by memorizing attack patterns.
